Longtime German national handball player Sebastian Heymann is moving within the Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) for the upcoming season, leaving the Rhein-Neckar Löwen to join TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. Both clubs announced the transfer on Tuesday.
Heymann’s contract in Mannheim was originally valid until 2027, but after two years, he will leave the Löwen this summer. “To achieve my personal goals, it’s important for me to get more playing time again,” he said.
The 28-year-old will reunite in Hanover with Renars Uscins and Justus Fischer, teammates from the German squad that won Olympic silver in Paris in 2024. Heymann was notably absent from the German national team for the 2025 World Championship and the 2026 European Championship, as injuries have frequently set back the powerful backcourt player.
“Basti has always put the team first and contributed everything that defines him. Despite some setbacks, he always fought his way back,” said Maik Machulla, coach of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. “Basti came to us with the wish to make a change from summer, also with regard to his sporting perspective. After intensive discussions, we granted his wish.”
