Diogo Jota passed away on July 3 at the age of 28 in a car accident in Spain. The Portuguese forward was traveling with his brother André Silva when a tire burst on their Lamborghini during an overtaking maneuver. The vehicle lost control, veered off the road, flipped over, and caught fire.
The memorial is designed as a heart-shaped intertwined ribbon. From different angles, the structure forms the numbers 20 and 30 — the jersey numbers of the two brothers. The inscription “20 Forever” is featured on the monument itself.
On the pedestal, a fan chant is engraved that supporters sing at the 20th minute of Liverpool matches in memory of Jota. Personal mementos brought by fans to Anfield after the tragedy are planned to be placed at the base of the memorial.
Additionally, the creators chose to reflect Jota’s life beyond football by adding an image of a game controller on the pedestal, as the Portuguese was an avid video game enthusiast.
The memorial will be installed on 97th Avenue in Liverpool. An exact date for the unveiling has yet to be announced.
